The antifa designation story is entering its second year with concrete consequences. President Trump designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization in September 2025, and one year later, nine individuals were convicted by a federal jury on domestic terrorism charges connected to Antifa in March 2026. The group was accused of being part of the North Texas Antifa Cell and was found guilty of rioting, using weapons and explosives, providing material support to terrorists, obstruction, and attempted murder in connection with the attempted murder of an Alvarado, Texas, police officer and correctional officers at the Prairieland ICE Detention Center on July 4, 2025. Benjamin Song, identified as the group's leader, received 100 years in prison. Maricela Rueda received 70 years. Five others received 50-year sentences, and one received 30 years. Several others also received lengthy prison sentences for the same attack. One Antifa member was sentenced to 100 years in prison following a guilty verdict in a plot to target an ICE detention center in Texas.

The State Department designated four European antifa groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations last November: Antifa Ost in Germany, the International Revolutionary Front, or Informal Anarchist Federation, in Italy, and Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self Defense in Greece. Most recently, the State Department imposed sanctions on an Italian leftist group known as Autistici/Inventai, also known as the A/I Collective, which was accused of digitally supporting Antifa groups, including Rose City Antifa out of Portland, Oregon.

The France protests are the largest current story involving antifa groups. Some 50 radical antifa cells are working within a wider network of nearly 300 groups to mobilize for weekend demonstrations, including an "anti-fascist village" against Marine Le Pen's National Rally in Orléans and nationwide Acte II protests intended to replicate last week's violent riots. Sixty-four-nine planned protests had been organized as of early Friday, including at 21 train stations, three ports, two oil depots, and one refinery. Organizers are planning Acte III on October 31, a broader strike and blockade mobilization on November 5, and a Europe-wide action on November 20. The throughline is that the US designations have produced convictions and the European designations are expanding, while the France mobilizations are the largest current antifa-connected protest activity and are explicitly framed as anti-fascist.

What to watch next: the Acte III protest on October 31 in France, the November 5 blockade, the Europe-wide action on November 20, and whether the US designations and convictions produce any broader legal precedent for domestic terror designations.
