The word "antifa" was deployed as a political weapon twice this week by heads of government trying to delegitimize mass protest movements on their own soil. In France, a French intelligence assessment reportedly identified Antifa and other far-left groups as instigators of the riots that erupted during nationwide protests against rising living costs and school underfunding. In Albania, Prime Minister Edi Rama claimed that "antifa" (which he described as "a force that the President of the United States has designated as a terrorist organization") had radicalized young protesters demanding his resignation. Both claims are structurally false. Antifa is not a centralized organization, it has no leadership, and it has no membership rolls. It is an umbrella term for decentralized anti-fascist politics practiced by individuals and small groups. The governments making these claims know that, and they are deploying the label because it works: it lets them lump together students protesting teacher shortages, trade unionists marching against inflation, and anarchists smashing windows, and call the whole thing a terrorist conspiracy.

The actual antifascist movement was busy doing what it has always done: organizing on the ground, building legal defense infrastructure, and documenting far-right organizing. CrimethInc. launched the NSPM-7 Defendants Union this month, a collective defense project for people targeted under the Trump administration's National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, which the administration is using to justify killings, raids, and prosecutions against left-wing activists. Unicorn Riot continued publishing leaked far-right chat logs through its DiscordLeaks database. And in France, fifty Antifa groups joined a vast network to ensure chaos at weekend protests, as the movement's own coordination became a story that governments tried to isolate from the broader economic demands driving the crowds.
