Key findings
Iran's two-front cyber war against Israel
- Jerusalem Post (2026): Since October 7, Iran has sharply escalated cyber operations against Israel, through fronts such as Handala Hack, CyberAv3ngers, and IDFLeaks. Handala, tied to Iran's Intelligence Ministry, has leaked the phone of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's aide Tzachi Braverman, breached Naftali Bennett's Telegram account, doxxed Unit 8200 members, and claimed 197 gigabytes of data from the Nahal Sorek nuclear center. Offline, counter-espionage arrests rose 400% in 2024 as Iran recruited Israelis on Telegram for surveillance and sabotage. Hamas minutes seized by the IDF show Yahya Sinwar spent over two years planning the October 7 attack and worked to persuade Iran and Hezbollah to join a wider war. Reports say Persian was heard among the terrorists during the attack. (Source)
Unit 8200, Israel's elite cyber intelligence unit
- Powerbase (2026): Unit 8200, the IDF's signal intelligence and code deciphering arm, is widely linked to the Stuxnet, Flame, and Duqu cyber-attacks against Iran, the intelligence that led to the 2007 strike on the Syrian reactor at al-Kibar, and the 2024 pager attacks in Lebanon. Since 2014, it has faced growing criticism over mass surveillance of Palestinians, storage of intercepted Palestinian phone calls on Microsoft cloud servers, and its role in AI-assisted targeting in Gaza. A joint investigation by the Guardian, +972 Magazine, and Local Call (August 2025) reported that Unit 8200 used a customized area of Microsoft's Azure cloud platform to store audio files of millions of phone calls made by Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank (the system became operational in 2022 and the trove was used to plan air strikes in Gaza and as a basis for arrests in the West Bank. In April 2024, another investigation revealed Lavender, an AI-based programme that, according to six intelligence officers, played a central role in the bombing of Gaza) four said that at one stage early in the war it listed as many as 37,000 Palestinian men as linked to Hamas or Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Unit 8200's commander, Brig. Gen. Yossi Sariel, resigned in September 2024, saying "I did not fulfill my mission," after the unit was criticized for failure to anticipate the October 7 attack. Gaza strikes and ceasefire violations
- Times of Israel (October 11, 2026): Israeli forces destroyed Hamas military infrastructure in several strikes across the Gaza Strip over the past day, including three weapons depots, a rocket-launch site, and a surveillance command center in Gaza City's Daraj and Tuffah neighborhoods. A platoon commander in Hamas's elite Nukhba force who helped lead the October 7 raid on the Kissufim military post and took part in the abduction of hostages was killed in a strike in Khan Younis. The Hamas-run Health Ministry says 1,488 people have been killed and 5,281 wounded by IDF strikes and gunfire in the Strip since the ceasefire took effect a year ago, on October 11, 2025. Prime Minister Netanyahu is holding a security discussion at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv to discuss Iran, Gaza, and Lebanon. (Source)
Lebanon and Hezbollah tensions
- Israel National News (October 2026): Hezbollah launched three reconnaissance drones into southern Lebanon's security zone over the past two weeks; the IAF failed to intercept two of them but withheld details from the public, according to a Galei Zahal report. Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Hezbollah against joining an Iranian attack on Israel, saying the IDF will seize additional territory in southern Lebanon and strike Beirut's Dahieh district. The IDF's 810th Brigade discovered a ready-to-detonate explosive device and a Hezbollah position during an operation near Kfar Shouba in southern Lebanon. Two men were killed in south Lebanon (one by Israeli shelling and the other by an explosive remnant of war) while taking part in the annual olive harvest. Israel continues sporadic strikes and demolitions while Hezbollah refuses to submit to government plans to disarm it. (Source)
- Times of Israel (October 11, 2026): Netanyahu rejects claims he was part of the pre-October 7th "conception," defends his "total victory" pledge, and vows to establish a balanced commission of inquiry if reelected. (Source)
