Gaza under ceasefire: 1,493 killed since October 2025 truce, winter approaching
- UN News / OCHA (Oct 19, 2026): Israeli attacks on war-torn Gaza over the weekend killed at least six Palestinians, including children, despite a year-old ceasefire agreement. Local health authorities told OCHA 57 Palestinians were reported killed and 319 injured between September 29 and October 12, bringing the total number of casualties since the October 2025 ceasefire agreement to 1,493 fatalities and 5,299 injuries. Deadly Israeli airstrikes, gunfire, and shelling occurred alongside incursions, demolitions, and reported shifts in the so-called "yellow line" imposed by Israel since the year-old ceasefire agreement. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million people still need shelter assistance as winter sets in, with the UN migration agency, IOM, warning that current supplies meet only about 17% of needs. Aid into Gaza remains held back by underfunding and Israeli restrictions, including limited access to more than 64% of Gaza's land. (Source)
- UN News / UNICEF (Oct 16, 2026): A little over a year since a ceasefire agreement was announced between Hamas fighters and Israel, more than 340 children have been reported killed and hundreds more injured, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported. More than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the October 2025 Hamas-Israel ceasefire agreement that ended two years of war. (Source)
- Security Council / UN News (Oct 16, 2026): Amid a rise in lethal Israeli strikes, demolitions, and violence in Gaza and the West Bank, the Security Council held an open debate on Thursday focusing on the current situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In the West Bank, more than 1,600 Israeli settler attacks were recorded this year as of mid-September, over 4,300 Palestinians have been displaced, and with the olive harvest underway, UN partners are working to protect farmers. - Le Monde (Oct 2026): Israel marked the third anniversary of the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks with tributes to victims and new strikes on the Palestinian enclave, against the backdrop of political debate weeks before the first general election since the attacks. Israeli officers spoke to Le Monde, in collaboration with the NGO Breaking The Silence, about the military's rules of engagement in Gaza, the acknowledged number of civilian casualties caused by its operations, and the extensive use of artificial intelligence. West Bank: olive harvest violence, settler attacks, settlement expansion
- AP News (Oct 17, 2026): In Abu Falah on Friday, settlers attacked the village while Israeli military was seen raiding into the village and throwing tear gas. Local officials and the Palestine Red Crescent Society reported attacks in at least eight villages in the northern West Bank, where most of the olive groves are concentrated and tens of thousands of Palestinian families depend on them for income. Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers harvesting olives in Turmus Ayya, in the occupied West Bank, on Friday, setting fire to cars and damaging property. Israel has imposed new rules on the olive harvest this year, prohibiting Palestinians from working in what's known as Area C, which is under Israeli security control and encompasses the majority of the territory's agricultural land. At least four Palestinians have been killed and more than 100 injured since the harvest season began earlier this month. A Washington Post photographer, Heidi Levine, was undergoing surgery on her finger, which was nearly detached from her hand after she was beaten by settlers in the West Bank. (Source)
- Ahram Online (Oct 7, 2026): A Palestinian was killed, and 16 others were injured on Wednesday when settlers, protected by Israeli forces, attacked olive pickers from the town of Burqa, northwest of Nablus, on their land between Burqa and Sahl Ramin, east of Tulkarm. The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the man killed as 44-year-old Ali Hassan Yasser al-Bazari. The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that 16 people, including a woman and paramedics, were injured in the attack, either by gunfire or beatings. Israeli forces also assaulted medical teams and field volunteers in Burqa. WAFA said a large group of settlers, accompanied by Israeli forces, attacked farmers from Burqa while they were picking olives on their land in Sahl Ramin, firing at them and beating them. On Sunday, the Palestinian Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission said settlers had carried out 14,742 attacks in the West Bank since October 2023, killing 66 Palestinians. Attacks by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank have killed 1,210 Palestinians, wounded 13,350, and led to the arrest of 24,600 people since the Gaza war began. The number of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is estimated at around 750,000, living in illegal 194 settlements and 400 outposts. (Source)
- UN News (Oct 19, 2026): Five Palestinians were killed and over 240 injured by Israeli forces or settlers over the past two weeks, with 200 olive harvest-related attacks documented since the start of September. UN independent human rights experts warned on Monday that Palestinian farmers are facing renewed threats as the annual olive harvest gets underway, urging Israel to guarantee their protection and safe access to their land. Record demolitions displaced 96 Palestinians. (Source)
- Le Monde (Oct 2026): In response to increased US pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the evacuation of certain settlements in the occupied West Bank that were established without government approval. Violence that broke out Friday morning around Nablus left two Israelis and four Palestinians dead. The Israeli government ordered the army to accelerate illegal settlements. (Source)
The NAZA documentary: Israeli soldiers on Gaza targeting decisions
- MS NOW / Jacob Soboroff (Oct 11, 2026): A new documentary, "NAZA," provides a searing look into the inner-workings of the Israeli military's operation in the Gaza Strip. Its namesake is derived from a Hebrew military term for "collateral damage." Academy Award-winning director and investigative journalist Yuval Abraham joined Jacob Soboroff to discuss the film's implications. NAZA pulls Israel's military operations as Abraham sits down with 24 Israeli intelligence personnel and soldiers who described the orders that they received and the strikes they carried out and the decisions that shape the war. It is a scathing expose on the IDF's calculated targeting of civilians in Gaza through missile strikes and sniper fire and surveillance. On dark rooftops across Tel Aviv, the soldiers recount their roles and operations that revealed a system in which civilian deaths were not simply an unfortunate consequence of war, but an accepted and sometimes deliberate part of its operations. - PerspectivesTv (Oct 3, 2026): NAZA, the full story. Filmed at night on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, this Israeli documentary presents interviews about the Gaza war. The war in Gaza, told through the testimonies of IDF officers who took part. Through firsthand accounts, this documentary examines combat in civilian areas, the challenges of identifying threats, and the decisions made on the battlefield. (Source)
- SFG (Oct 15, 2026): NAZA is built around interviews with 24 Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel who describe how targets were selected, how acceptable civilian casualties were calculated, and how technology was used in the process. The title Naza comes from the Hebrew expression Nezek Agav meaning collateral damage, referring in the military context to the estimated number of civilians who may be killed in a particular strike. The documentary, directed by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Shorr, is based on interviews with 24 Israeli military and intelligence personnel discussing their involvement in the war in Gaza. (Source)

Israel's operational footprint: strikes in Lebanon, cyber, and the settlement-accelerated West Bank
- Le Monde (Oct 2026): Four killed by Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, despite ceasefire. Lebanon's president on Sunday called for US help to stop Israeli strikes as the death toll continued to mount. Israeli troops remain in parts of southern Lebanon despite US-mediated talks aimed at securing their withdrawal and Hezbollah's disarmament. The militant group has refused to disarm, while Israel continues to carry out strikes in southern Lebanon. (Source)
- Israeli military data (Oct 7, 2026): The Israeli military said its forces had struck about "100,000 targets across various fronts since the start of the war", about 65,000 sites in Gaza, about 28,000 in Lebanon and Syria, around 4,500 in Iran, and about 80 in Yemen. In Gaza alone, Israeli strikes over the past three years have killed 74,243 Palestinians and wounded 175,232 others, according to the health ministry. (Source)
- Faisal Shovon (Oct 26, 2024): Meet Israel's Shadow Army (Unit 8200. How did one of the world's most powerful surveillance units fail to predict the October 7th attack? This video dives deep into the shadowy world of Unit 8200, Israel's elite military intelligence and cyber warfare division), often compared to America's NSA, covering their unconventional recruitment of teenage hackers, their role in creating the infamous STUXNET virus that sabotaged Iran's nuclear program, and their alleged involvement in the recent deadly Hezbollah pager explosions. Unit 8200 veterans are fueling Israel's "Silicon Wadi" tech boom, creating controversial spyware like PEGASUS sold to governments worldwide. (Source)
- Brinkwell (Nov 15, 2025): Inside Unit 8200: Israel's Secret Cyber Army That Rewrote War. How did Israel's elite Unit 8200 hack Iran's nuclear program? This true crime documentary reveals the covert Mossad operations that created Stuxnet, the world's first cyber weapon that sabotaged Iranian centrifuges. From the 1973 Yom Kippur intelligence failure to modern AI-powered cyber warfare, discover how Mossad and Unit 8200 turned code into weapons. (Source)
The Israel story in October 2026 is the story of a war that officially ended a year ago but never actually stopped (and is now producing body counts that are creeping back toward wartime levels despite the October 2025 ceasefire. Since the ceasefire was announced, Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,460 Palestinians in Gaza, according to Gaza's health ministry, bringing total casualties since the truce to 1,493 fatalities and 5,299 injuries as of mid-October. More than 340 children have been killed in Gaza despite the ceasefire agreement, UNICEF reported. Nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million people still need shelter assistance as winter sets in, with current supplies meeting only about 17% of needs, and aid into Gaza remains held back by underfunding and Israeli restrictions) including limited access to more than 64% of Gaza's land.
The throughline that connects Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon is the gap between the diplomatic framework (ceasefires, truces, disarmament talks) and the operational reality on the ground (near-daily strikes, settler violence during the olive harvest, Israeli troops remaining in southern Lebanon despite US-mediated withdrawal talks, Hezbollah refusing to disarm, Israel continuing strikes in southern Lebanon). The West Bank has become a second active front: five Palestinians were killed and over 240 injured by Israeli forces or settlers over the past two weeks alone, with 200 olive harvest-related settler attacks documented since the start of September. Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers harvesting olives in at least eight villages in the northern West Bank, where most olive groves are concentrated and tens of thousands of Palestinian families depend on them for income. A Washington Post photographer, Heidi Levine, was undergoing surgery on her finger after being beaten by settlers in the West Bank.
The NAZA documentary (released in October 2026 by Israeli director Yuval Abraham and Rachel Soar), is the most significant Israeli domestic intervention in the war narrative this period, pulling together interviews with 24 Israeli intelligence personnel and soldiers who described the orders they received and the strikes they carried out. The film's central claim is that civilian deaths in Gaza were not simply an unfortunate consequence of war but "an accepted and sometimes deliberate part" of the system, a claim the IDF has not addressed directly. The film is named after the Hebrew military term "Nezek Agav" (NAZA), meaning collateral damage, referring to the estimated number of civilians who may be killed in a particular strike.
What to watch next: whether the Israeli election (the first general election since the October 7, 2023 attacks, with voters deciding whether Benjamin Netanyahu stays prime minister or Gadi Eisenkot takes the lead) produces a government willing to change the operational posture in Gaza and the West Bank, whether the evacuation of certain unauthorized West Bank settlements ordered by Netanyahu under US pressure actually happens, and whether the Security Council's October 15 open debate on the Occupied Palestinian Territory produces any meaningful pressure.
