Key findings

The alphabet soup of self-dealing and conflicts

Crypto wealth, stock trades, and the midterm stakes

The Trump administration's corruption story in late 2026 is not a single scandal but a layering of self-enrichment schemes that, taken together, form a picture of a presidency being run as a revenue center. A now-former ambassador asked a donor for $100,000 to cover credit card debt while lobbying the administration. The Department of Homeland Security bought multiple airplanes from a donor to the outgoing secretary at apparently inflated prices. A Russian oligarch with close ties to Vladimir Putin paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for parts of Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding celebration (and Trump Jr. later refunded the money after criticism. A mysterious multimillion-dollar transfer from a wealthy Turkish investor became the subject of a dispute between two Trump allies. And a former Justice Department official secured a $50 million employment deal with a company that had only recently been set up, even as she served as a top adviser at DOJ) shortly before the billionaire who hired her got a pardon he had been seeking.

The scale of the self-dealing is difficult to overstate: Trump has made more than $1 billion off cryptocurrency, his family's crypto company World Liberty Financial depends heavily on Binance (whose founder pled guilty to violating anti-money-laundering laws and went to prison) and Trump gave that same founder a presidential pardon. He has repeatedly promoted companies shortly after buying their stock, according to a CNN investigation, and his social media company is allowing Wall Street firms to pay for quicker access to market-moving posts. A Washington Post/ABC News poll showed nearly two-thirds of Americans said Trump was using the presidency to enrich himself. With the midterm elections approaching, the corruption issue has become a live political force rather than background noise.
