Polling: Americans see self-enrichment

The Trump administration's corruption story in fall 2026 is not one scandal but a rolling set of them, each connecting the same basic pattern: people close to the president enriching themselves, or their donors, their family, their friends, while occupying positions of official power. The reporting has moved from individual allegations to a web of overlapping financial arrangements that the White House has been unable to untangle with dismissals and denials.

The most concrete thread right now runs through Alina Habba, Trump's former personal lawyer and former acting U.S. attorney in New Jersey. The New York Times reported that Habba secured a $50 million employment deal with a company set up by the family of a Venezuelan banker who was seeking a pardon from the Trump administration, while she was still serving as a top adviser in the Justice Department. Habba has denied any role in the pardon. That same alleged pay-to-play logic now extends to a separate feud between Habba and Richard Grenell over a missing $17.6 million transfer that was supposed to go to the Kennedy Center.

The throughline connecting all of this is the erosion of any meaningful ethics barriers inside the administration. ProPublica has documented a web of financial ties between senior officials and the industries they regulate, including Attorney General Pam Bondi's well-timed stock sales just before markets plunged on Trump's tariff announcements. A Washington Post/ABC News poll found nearly two-thirds of Americans believe Trump is using the presidency to enrich himself. That is not a partisan poll in a low-trust environment. It is a majority of the country saying the obvious out loud, and it is feeding directly into the midterm election environment.
